The problems studied in the research are related to students' low mathematical problem solving abilities and the application of the Means Ends Analysis (MEA) model. The aim of the research is to determine and analyze the difference in the average problem solving ability using the Means Ends Analysis (MEA) model which is higher than that using conventional learning for class VIII Even Semester students at SMP Negeri 1 Pesawaran for the 2022/2023 academic year. This research is using experimental method. The population in this study were all class VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Pesawaran consisting of 11 classes with a total of 344 students, while the sample was taken from 2 classes, namely class VIIIA as the experimental class, totaling 32, and class VIIIB as the control class, totaling 32. The sample was taken using the Cluster Random Sampling technique. Students' mathematical problem solving abilities are measured using a test in the form of an essay with 5 questions whose validity and reliability have been tested. Hypothesis testing uses the t-test. From the results of hypothesis testing using the t- test, the value t = 3.61 was obtained. From the t distribution table at the 5% significance level, it is known that t = t_((1-α))= meaning t > t, namely 3.61 > 1.67, so it can be concluded that "The average mathematical problem solving ability of students who use the learning model "Means Ends Analysis (MEA) is greater than the average problem solving ability of students who use the conventional model in class VIII students in the even semester of SMP Negeri 1 Pesawaran for the 2022/2023 academic year." This situation can be seen from the average value of the experimental class students' mathematical problem solving abilities which is higher than the control class, namely 75.75 > 65.50.
