Abstract

Experimental research using the Open Ended approach raises the problem of less than optimal mathematical communication skills, with the aim of research to analyze the difference in the average mathematical communication skills of students who apply the Open Ended approach to those who apply the conventional approach to class VIII semester students of MTs Kesuma Sumber Sari South Lampung. The method in this study uses experimental methods, and data analysis using parametric statistical formulas (t-test). The research population was all students of class VIII MTs Kesuma Sumber Sari South Lampung, while the sample was taken 2 classes, namely class VIII A as the experimental class which amounted to 23 students and class VIII C as the control class which amounted to 22 students. The sample was taken using the Cluster Random Sampling technique with a lottery procedure. Students' mathematical communication skills were measured by a test in the form of an essay as many as 6 questions which had been tested for validity and reliability. The results of hypothesis testing show thit = 3.20. From the t distribution table at a significant level of 5%, it is known that tdaf = t (1-α) = 1.68, meaning that thit > tdaf is 3.20 > 1.68, so it can be concluded that the average mathematical communication ability of students who apply the Open approach Ended is higher than the average mathematical communication ability of students who apply the conventional approach to students of class VIII Even Semester MTs Kesuma Sumber Sari Lampung Selatan 2020/2021 Academic  Year.
